Cuenca is a beautiful city located at the southern area of Ecuador in South America. This city is a good place to escape from the cold winters of the USA or Europe. Here you will enjoy the spring and the summer seasons all year long. Even, if you prefer, you could be in winter, spring and summer in one day. The best thing of people in Cuenca is that they are very welcoming and helpful. They really love tourist that come visit the city.
Cuenca has everything needed to entertain its visitors. There are bars and discos of all types such as: salsa, techno, 80’s, karaoke, if you feel singing yourself, life music, where people have a good time. Note that the bars and discos in Cuenca open early because they close early too, at approximately 2:30 am. If you visit Cuenca, the place to go is “La calle Larga”, which is the place where there are a lot of restaurants, bars and places where to dance.

It is convinent to be in Cuenca; because from this city it’s easy to take a car to the coast, approximnately 3 hours away, to take a car to the rainforest, or to take a plane to the main cities in Ecuador such as: Quito or Guayaquil.
Furthermore, this city offers sports like Climbing, in the national park called Cajas, sport phishing in one of its 300 lakes located at an elevation of approximately 10.000 ft over the level of the sea, and, of course soccer, where you can see the city team playing the professional league of Ecuador.
If somebody is visiting Cuenca, remember to eat guinea pig, which is a delicacie from this area. Also, remember to drink “mapanagua” which is an alcoholic drink that have fresh sugar cane juice , orange juice and moonshine.

I think I might just visit Cuenca. It sounds like a very nice place to visit. When is the best time to visit that is not so crowded and not too humid?
Hello
Cuenca is not humid at all. Any time of the year is a good time to visit. Nevertheless, it gets expensive in December. You will really enjoy there.

Buenos Dias Italo – We are travelling to Cuenca in the first months of 2011. Is there any specific things that we need to know about your beautiful city before we come – weather? costs? accommodation? Apartments?
We are learning Spanish – “survaval” Spanish now and intend to continue while we are in Cuenca.
Chao chao – for now – Susan
Hello Susan
The weather in Ecuador does not change, spring and summer all year long. If you are going for vacations, you might want to make hotel reservations couples weeks before traveling. People is very nice in Ecuador and you won’t have any problem getting around Ecuador. The entry cities are Quito and Guayaquil, so, in order to get to Cuenca, you have to take a local flight from Quito or Guayaquil. I recommend arriving in Quito, so you can see the beautiful snow capped mountains.
Have a nice trip to Ecuador

Italo,
I’m making plans to visit your part of the world in the coming months. I’ve applied for long term visa and am hoping to be accepted. However, I’ll need long term accommodations. Are you able to send a list of websites that offer apartment rentals? It seems the sites listed are not very current. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I hope to hear from you soon.

Hello Steven
I don’t actually live in Ecuador anymore. So, I’m not up to date on long term accommodations. Which city in Ecuador do you plan to be living on? It is very easy to get around in Ecuador. Plus, people is very helpful there. Let me know which city do you plan to stay and I might be able to send you some suggestions. I’ll e-mail you something.
You will have a very good time in Ecuador

Steven,
It is not going to be difficult to find a nice place. You may be able to get some info in this hostel called “El Cafecito”. Everybody traveling goes there. Further, next door of this hostel you’ll find an ecuadorian-american english academy called Abraham Lincoln Center, in which you’ll find people from the US living in Ecuador. They definitely can guide you in finding a place where to stay.

I have read that Cuenca, Ecuador is a great place to retire. I did settle in the Philippines for several years because it offered much of the same charms as Cuenca. However, I was disappointed with Internet access in those years. Did you have any problems with getting high-speed access to the web from Ecuador?
There are not problems connecting into the internet. You can have high-speed internet access in Cuenca without problems.
